Congress moving forward with plan to tie college funding to support for RIAA measures
Filed under: RIAA News

The Electronic Frontier Foundation warns us that H.R. 4137, the College Opportunity and Affordability Act of 2007, is still steaming ahead with its "Campus-based Digital Theft Prevention" that ties college funding to universities' purchase of DRM-based industry-sanctioned download services and deployment of network snoopware that spies on and disconnects college kids if they appear to be violating copyright (without any hard evidence or a chance for the student to present her side of the story).

RIAA Website Wiped Clean by “Hackers”

It started out on Reddit, where a link to a really slow SQL query was posted. While the Reddit users were trying to kill the RIAA server, someone allegedly decided to up the ante and wipe the site’s entire database.

The comments on Reddit are only speculation so far. Based on the username, which was apparently “webReadOnly”, it might not have been setup correctly, or someone could have found another way to delete the content form the site.

The RIAA speaks--and it gets worse

The RIAA has quickly become one of the most disliked organizations in the world. Working ostensibly with the interests of the artists in mind, the organization has single-handedly instituted a policy of lawsuits and education in an attempt to curb the piracy of music.

Although this has been going on for quite some time now, I recently read a press release from the organization outlining its successes and what 2008 will look like for its College Deterrence program.

The press release tells us that the RIAA (on behalf of the music industry) has sent out "a new wave of 407 pre-litigation settlement letters to 18 universities nationwide as part of an ongoing campaign against online music theft. The letters reflect evidence of significant abuse of campus computer networks for the purpose of copyright infringement."

Spin Magazine vs. SPiN: Philly-based Rockers Fight Back
Filed under: In The Courts

The edgy Philadelphia based, Jägermeister sponsored pop rock band SPiN wrapped 2007 with the exciting news that “Home”—the debut single from their self-titled EP helmed by Grammy winning producer/engineer David Ivory—had hit the Top 20 on FMQB’s AC40 chart (now #11 on chart). After several years of major East Coast success that included over 100 shows a year, the hardworking group was finally breaking through on a national level.

The well-known national music monthly Spin magazine took notice—but not in the way the four musicians would have hoped. On January 3, the band received a letter from the attorney for the publication’s parent company Spin Media, LLC, claiming that the name “SPiN” constitutes trademark infringement “of the famous and valuable” SPIN brand.

The letter claims that since the band SPiN is using the “SPIN mark” for music, there is a “strong likelihood of consumer confusion”; it says, “your clients’ unauthorized use of the SPIN mark is likely to cause confusion, mistake or deception as to an affiliation, connection or association with Spin Media and its SPIN mark, and as to the origin, sponsorship or approval of your clients’ goods and services.”

An interview with John Petrucci

Born on July 12, 1967, guitar god John Petrucci grew up in New York City. By the age of twelve John had picked up the guitar, growing into an obsession that would become a massive part of his life. In history very few guitarists receive the worldwide acclaim and recognition that John has. Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Hendrix and Jimmy Page are all up there of course and being in the same league as names like that is mighty fine. Growing up John would practice for at least six hours a day, which has no doubt helped shape the amazing and talented guitar player which we see before us today. Influenced by many of the greats including Randy Rhoads, Steve Morse and Stevie Ray Vaughan, John took guitar playing to new levels and was voted by Total Guitar Magazine as guitarist of the year in 2007.

Forming the legendary progressive metal band Dream Theater with school friend/ bassist John Myung and drummer Mike Portnoy at the age of eighteen, Petrucci and crew took Dream Theater to the world. Breaking all the rules and following there hearts Dream Theater have set new standards for all progressive rock and metal bands that follow. In 2007 the band released there ninth studio album ‘Systematic Chaos’ which was praised by fans worldwide and included fantastic tracks such as ‘The Ministry of Lost Souls’, ‘The Dark Eternal Night’, and my favourite track ‘Forsaken’. After many years with record label Atlantic/Elektra 2007 also seen Dream Theater signing to Roadrunner records a relationship that is proving to be strong and healthy.

More than twenty years after the bands formation, Australian Dream Theater fans finally heard the news they have longed for... The very first Australian Dream Theater tour! The tour which kicks off in Perth on Jan 26 (Australia day) will prove to be a breathtaking and truly amazing show that fans won’t want to miss! Meet and greet packages were put together as part of the bands first visit to Australia and fans snapped them up within days of being announced. The meet and greet packages are a great way for the band to interact with 50 of there biggest fans at every one of the Australian shows.

I recently caught up with guitar great John Petrucci to discuss the bands first ever-Australian tour and the excitement shared amongst the members. We also discussed the bands latest album ‘Systematic Chaos’ and talked about John being perceived as one of the worlds greatest guitarist. ‘In The Presence of Enemies’ it’s time to kick back with the one and only John Petrucci

Ike was credited with releasing the first rock-n-roll record in 1951: "Rocket 88". In the 1960s & 1970s, Ike had a string of hits with wife Tina Turner, including "River Deep, Mountain Wide", "I Want to Take You Higher", and, of course, "Proud Mary".
