| UMG & MySpace To Settle? |

We followed up with, "in much the same way that when Vivendi sued GoTube, with UMG's Doug Morris saying the site consistently violated music industry copyrights, you knew it wouldn't be long before wedding bells sounded. And it'll be the same with MySpace, although the process may take quite a bit longer." Now, "I think it will settle," Reuters has Morris saying. Bidnes is, after all, bidnes. MySpace settling would be very, very bad news. As far as I understand it, they are safe from prosecution under the DMCA "Safe Harbour" provision, stating (in a nutshell) that a service provider is not responsible for copyright violation comitted by the users of said service if the provider responds in a timely manner to a take-down notice. If MySpace settles, it has the ability to nullify the Safe Harbour provision, which will see lasting effects on websites, communities like MySpace, ISPs and virtually anyone with a permanent presence online. Hell, even tinfoil.music could feel some effects now that we have moved our hosting services from the UK to the US of A. Ouch. Add your comment
