Wrathchild is arguably in the top five best Maiden songs ever. From Arrys opening bass line to the orphaned howl of the lead guitar, the song just spits venom and raises your adrenaline. And original Maiden vocalist, Paul Dianno, sings the original version of the tune like he truly is a child of wrath. MAIDEN JAPAN,one of Maidens early EPs, contains a live version of "Wrathchild" that could take you back to the early 80s again (it may even bring sentimental tears from some Maiden fans). This lowly hack writer was thrilled when he finally found the Castle Records cassette version of KILLERS- the one that had the EP on the flip-side (my cassette copy didnt survive the 80s due to friction, wear, use, and abuse). MJ was my first encounter with Maiden, and with Paul Dianno.... Iron Maiden has been band enough for three vocalists- and like some of his band-mates, Paul Dianno has moved on to his own solo career. I sent a shout out to Paul sometime back, and he has graciously sent us some answers here at TINFOIL MUSIC . From one Maiden fan to another, I hope you enjoy catching up with the Beast of Wrath, DIANNO: Tell us- what is The Beast up to right now musically? You have an autobiography out now called The Beast. Heres your shot to plug it. Tell us- what can we find in those pages? Actually my autobiography has been out now for a couple of years, and it was basically a way of releasing all those old demons and I can tell you that it is definitely not a regular rock n roll type book. I have since that release also released a DVD called "The Beast In The East" which was made a couple of years ago in Eastern Europe/Poland. And right now I am working on a surprise release that you'll be hearing about on my website: www.pauldianno.com within a month or so. I am also touring extensively and also recently (1 year ago) got myself an all Italian band called Screaming Monkey. You have a DVD out- where was it shot? Tell us about it. As above in Poland in a place called Katowice with a Norway band, and with all of the bonus extras, it is 3 hours long, and a damn fine DVD. Your discography is sizable- out of all of this music, what work is your personal favorite? Favorite Maiden tune? (I gotta ask that, bro). 2 songs: Running Free and Remember Tomorrow Tell us about your musical influences: Paul knows metal. Paul knows classic rock. Paul knows punk. What inspired Paul to front a band? What music/bands are you into at the moment? I always had diverse tastes in music and still do I guess.Right now I listen to Ramones, Sepultura, Linkin Park, Judas Priest, Cat Stevens,System of a down, Pistols etc etc. I asked Blaze, and I must ask you- what is your favorite Maiden memory and why? Favourite Maiden memory, well quite honestly there are far to many to write down. One would have to be Me Dave and Clive being so wrecked that we dropped our coke down the gents at a club one night and were all and were all crawling about on all fours (getting covered in piss) trying to retrieve our stash of powder. How has Brazil influenced your sound? Brazil never actually influenced my sound but it definitely influenced my vision as I love the place and the people. You once said in another interview that I didn't handle fame very well when you were speaking of the early years and sudden fame. How does Paul handle his fame and name recognition now? No American dates on the 2004 tour ? I didn't handle fame well in the early years, and in fact didn't handle anything well in those days, but now it's just another part of the job. Still no US shows until Uncle Sam forgives me. What would you say if someone called you one of the pioneers of the NWOBHM? Well I would have to admit that it is pretty true. ----- THANKS, PAUL! Be sure to check out Paul's website. Excuse me while I go turn Wrathchild up a notch or two louder . *Interesting historic footnote for TINFOIL MUSIC regulars: you have all read my mentor and sonic guru Skinny Devils (AKA King David) Guitar Gods series located here http://www.skinnydevil.com/GuitarGods.html . Dave shares this experience that he had when he met Paul way-back-when at a venue called "Bogarts:" When I played guitar for VICE (mid-1980s), we opened for Paul's band at Bogart's in Cincy. Backstage he was having difficulty getting the bottle opener to work on his beer and was uber-impressed when Glenn (our lead singer) opened the bottle with his teeth. Imagine Paul with a half-drunk look of astonishment, a long pause as he stares at the beer, and then his thick cockney-accent as he says "Decent!". His whole band cracked up. Somewhat interesting footnote: This will be my final ROCK VOX interview (unless one of you famous folks sneak one into my inbox soon). I am retiring due to a full work-load, family, and an impending trip back to college! Tinfoil (AKA Tinfoilius Josephus Internetus Canuckias Maximus, who is man, myth, or Canadian?- you decide) will be taking over ROCK VOX and taking it to the stars. I hope you have enjoyed this lowly hacks stabbing attempts at interviewing. I have had fun and I am thankful to Dave and Joe for my time in the arena! Signed, Tom Barnes (777- not a STRYPER reference, dang it!)- Somewhere in the American South! Yee-haw . Add your comment
