(busweek) If the name Edward W. Felten doesn't mean anything to you then don't feel bad. Many people don't know the name. Felten took on the SDMI (Secure Digital Music Initiative) and won. He in turn decided to make a presentation about his success. Hit Read More for the RIAA's response.

The SDMI challenge presented contestants with a number of digitally signed compressed audio files. The goal of the challenge was to break the encryption/signature without comprimising the sound quality of the file. Felten was succesful

As Felten prepared his paper, the RIAA sent him a nasty-gram stating that his actions could lead to actions taken against he and his team under the DMCA. Felten turned to the EFF for help.
