The SDMI challenge presented contestants with a number of digitally signed compressed audio files. The goal of the challenge was to break the encryption/signature without comprimising the sound quality of the file. Felten was succesful As Felten prepared his paper, the RIAA sent him a nasty-gram stating that his actions could lead to actions taken against he and his team under the DMCA.
