I just got home from work. It ain’t Friday yet. The day-job can grind a man down to frayed nerves and dull his wits. But as soon as I came home- behold… there was a little pick-me-up in my mail box: I got “Fear Not the Obvious," the debut Yayhoos CD (as I write this, I am listening to the track “Hunt You Down”). The timing couldn’t be better.

I am a little late to review it.

But I did interview Yayhoo member Terry Anderson.... If you keep up with my hack ramblings, you know that I interviewed Eric “Roscoe” Ambel and Dan Baird. Both gentlemen are in this band called the Yayhoos.

Get used to me talking about this band.

After today, the only other thing I could possibly need would be a Jason and the Scorchers reunion- if that happened, I would have no reason to cry for a while.

Good people, it is indeed funny how one thing leads to another. A while back I bought a replacement CD for my collection. It was a Georgia Satellites CD, called “Let it Rock…” (Dan Baird was vocalist for this band in the 80’s, if you honestly didn’t know). I said to myself: “wander what Dan Baird is doing now?” I went in search of the bard named Baird and you got the interview.

That led to my discovery of the Yayhoos. I quickly ordered the record from the Indie label the band was on (Bloodshot Records). I then went after Yayhoo axe-man Roscoe Ambel and you have read that interview by now, too- right?

But in lieu of waiting for the Yayhoos CD to arrive, I wanted to know more. I read the liner notes on the Satellites CD, and I saw that some cat named Terry Anderson wrote “Battleship Chains.” Then the light went on. Hey- that’s the Yayhoo drummer.

Drummer and Songwriter- not an oxymoron, hoss... you ain’t funny or witty.

I screamed down the pipe to Terry last night, and he was kind enough to give us some insight. And I won’t apologize for interviewing the third Yayhoo band member this month. If I could find Keith Christopher, I’d interview him too. If you ain’t on board, go read Metal Edge, Spin, or some crap like that. This is real rock.

So if you are still with me, here’s some Commen-Terry:

Who is Terry Anderson- and how did he end up in the Yayhoos?

Terry Anderson is a guy who can't be entertained by many people in this world so he must quite simply… entertain himself. That's why he writes songs, 'cause most of it out there is crap. That's why he play drums, 'cause most drummers suck! They think that playing drums is an athletic competion instead of music. Listen drummers!!..Play the damn song not the drums! TA ended up with the Yayhoos because these people do entertain him. They can play and write and sing and do all the things that a great band is supposed to be able to do.

Musical influences?

My musical influences are all the artists that mean what they do. The ones that aren't or didn't do it for the fuckin' money! Otis Redding, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Chuck, Little Richard...when these people play or sing..you know they mean it!

Have you always been a drummer? You have written songs for the Georgia Satellites and…?

I've always been a drummer. I ain't smart enuff to play guitar..just good enuff to write songs on it. I've written all my songs for myself, other people that have done them include..Jo Dee Messina, Etta James and of course, Dan Baird.

What is a good song?

A good song is one that sticks to your ribs like peanut butter. You just can't shake it. It has a great melody and lyrics that have a special meaning to you without embarassing you.

When you turn on modern rock radio, do you hear many good songs by your definition?

I don't turn on the radio. I've given up.

In my Tinfoil ‘Vox interview with Roscoe Ambel, he said this about the Yayhoos: “It’s a fantastic band with what I call "the Slingshot Effect". We really push each other in a great way. We have been described as the Harlem Globetrotters of Rock and Roll.” Explain this “slingshot effect” in your own words…

I guess the "Slingshot" effect is that while we each get a turn to show our goods to the crowd, the other three guys are playing their asses off, helpin' each guy with all our hearts to get his point across.

I ordered my copy of the Yayhoos “Fear Not the Obvious” from Bloodshot Records. Tell the people why it’s worth it, and tell them what to expect on the new upcoming record "Put the Hammer Down.”

"Fear Not" is a bargain at any price because you can't buy that shit any more! Good, inspired songs, played great, and more fun than you can get out of any other record out there. I'd rather sit at home (Well...dance at home!) with a bottle of wine and that thing blastin' than to go out and see any other hacks out there. The new record rocks like nothin' you've ever heard before. It really scares me to listen to it. It's a mighty mighty fuckin' ass kickin'!

Tell me about Oakteam…

The Olympic Ass-Kickin' Team is Jack Cornell on bass, who's played with me forever around Raleigh and Roger Gupton on guitar, who is almost like my son and one of the most musical people I know. We do songs from my records live and try to never play any slow songs. We, like the Yayhoos are just tryin' to keep the Rock and Roll alive. We have a great new record "in the can", as they say...but unfortunately, that's where most of the A & R guys throw'm when I send'm to'm..in the can!

Plug your stuff and your site… what’s up with the truffles, bro?

Check it out.. www.terryandersonrocks.com ...it's a way to let my peoples know whats I been up to. The truffle thing is something I've been interested in since I saw a special about it on PBS as a kid. My friend, Chef Bob (chef for the govenor of NC for 12 yrs.) and I have 500 trees (soon to be more) propogated with truffle sporem. We have harvested a few, maybe a dozen or so, but we've only had'm in the ground for 7 yrs. now. We'll see...

I always end this with same old question: what advice have ye for frustrated and aspiring songwriters or musicians?

Advice for aspiring songwriters? Throw out that shit you've been workin' on for 8 yrs... that song that you thought was a good idea but you just can't get it to work. If you ain't got most of it written in about 30 minutes, screw it! Come back to it the next day and if it ain't kickin' your ass...burn it!
