Shred maniac circles notwithstanding, there is often an attitude with many who dig "indie rock" that accomplished musicians are somehow not as legit as power-punk garage bands. It has been cool, since Nirvana, to be all about feel and to dismiss technical proficiency.

Along comes a spider named Cerenzia (the sole work of a guy known only as "Cos") to slaughter this oh-so-passe' view of music with a ripping instrumental CD called "Marauder".

In fairness, I don't suspect Cerenzia was thinking about slaying antiquated dragons. I suspect, rather, that he is merely playing his guitar because he loves to play his guitar. But it is exactly this approach which makes the music on "Marauder" so refreshing.

"Cry of the Wolf" kicks off the 10 song CD with long, slow, ethereal lines that howl from a distance...and that's about the last mellow moment you get. From there the disc explodes into a furious assault of gun-slinging guitar the way it used to be done: Cerenzia's chops are top-flight, with his heart & soul melting into each and every note.

One thing is missing: High-tech polish. This is a welcome absence, though. Cerenzia fearlessly leaves in all the blemishes, and this, in my view, serves to add to it's charm. Great songs, fabulous guitar technique, loads of guts & grit. If you like guitar gurus like Hendrix, Lynch, Howe, and the 1970s pantheon of guitar greats, you don't wanna miss this one!

Bottom line: Get it!
