My first thought was that Mark Akin's debut release (you know him from the soundtrack of "Dragon Ball-Z") would be a "guitar freak-out" CD, as Mark Akin is among the most gifted guitarists on today's scene. What I got instead was a surprise....
"Alien Car Chase" (2006, indieOpolis Records) is a collection of songs fully embracing the techno and anime worlds. The guitar is almost absent, but the composition is surprisingly fresh and energetic. It has a dark edge without being depressing and a drive as hard as nails.
Many of the tracks (like "Interstellar" & "MirrorFreek") take the listener on an extended journey while others ("Funky Robots" & "Solaris") jab you right in the face.
Mixing elements both heavy and quirky, Mark has demonstrated himself to be much more than a guitar shredder. He is a gifted composer and multi-instrumentalist as well, with the ability to fuse dis-similar chunks of sound and style into a bizarre & esoteric fabric of sound that reveals more with each listening experience.
This CD is not just for anime & electronica lovers, but any fans of good music.
