Call me a Zealot, eh? PDF Print

Attn: Sam Buite, Greig Mordue:

Good day,

I'm writing as a concerned Canadian. I'm a copyright owner and a consumer. I create content and I consume it. This provides me with a unique perspective that many consumers do not have. However, since I have consumed far more than I have created, I'll limit this missive to the consumer side of things. As a "journalist" writing about the music industry, it has come to my attention that I am, in fact, a zealot. Why, I don't know. I like being able to transfer my legally purchased MP3s to my iPod. I applaud grassroots efforts to reform the broken copyright laws in Canada to make them more consumer friendly. I shudder at the thought of making such laws more in line with those of the United States, the EU or Australia. Perhaps I'm a zealot because I believe in fair-use?

I don't know, exactly, when it was that I ceased to be a responsible, law-abiding consumer and became a zealot. Is it because of my liberal views on copyright? Is it because I think the entertainment industry, as it stands, is going to be as successful as the T-Rex (the dino, not the band)? Is it because I feel that, if not for the heroic efforts made by politicians to shield the entertainment industry from the reality of this brave new digital world will, ultimately, fail? Is it because I believe that people who represent Canadians and are paid through our taxes should concern themselves with more important things like, where the heck did the rest of the aid money Canada promised the tsunami victims go (as per National Geographic)?

I'm upset that I do not live in your riding. I would certainly relish the chance to see you come to my door in an effort to convince me to vote for you in the upcoming election, to ask you why you would want the vote of a "zealot." Such blanket statements are dangerous and often wrong. For instance, listening to Stephen Harper, one would think all Liberals are criminals. Thankfully I'm intelligent enough to realise he's full of crap.

Still, being called a zealot is certainly enough to make this Liberal supporter think twice about voting Liberal in my riding, come January 23rd. I don't think the Liberals can afford that right now, do you?
----

Greig Mordue is my local Liberal, which is why he is named as well. Certainly I don't expect any response from either of them, but if hell does freeze over, I'll post it here.
