As reported earlier this week the hosts of the Playfair application, SourceForge received a cease and desist order from Apple. As a result, SourceForge was forced to take down the software.

The C&D is pretty standard fare, citing the DMCA.

As a result of Apple's missive, PlayFair has now been moved to an Indian hosting company and is located at http://playfair.sarovar.org/.

PlayFair decodes Apple's 'FairPlay' encoded music files. These files are legally allowed to be played on up to three Apple or Windows computers as well as unlimited iPods. FairPlay is easily the most consumer friendly of the growing number of DRM schemes out there.

While I applaud the author's goal, I question what this may do to online music sales. I would rather the author and others like him attack the more restrictive DRM schemes while leaving Apple alone. For now. I don't say this because I am a Mac zealot. I say this because it would *possibly* show the industry that we consumers do not like being dictated to when we are buying luxury products. The more you dictate to us, the less we like it.
