A Russian online music service is offering songs online for one cent per megabyte in a format that you choose.

Charles Wright, a Sydney Morning Herald reporter, discovered the site, allofmp3.com, and has been using it. So far he has downloaded 968 songs of big name artists for just under $50. The same songs with the typical price tag of 99 cents a song comes out to $958 or with Walmart's cheaper 88 cent/song service, a total of $851.84.

The site charges users on a per megabyte system. The offering is approximately one MB for one cent. The site seems too cheap to be true but the site claims to be legal and licensed its content from the Russian Multimedia and Internet Society with a license number of LS-3M-03-79. There is however a disclaimer that forbids the service on a variety of grounds, including "if it is in conflict with legislation of your country". Also, all the materials are available solely for personal use and must not be used for further distribution, resale or broadcasting or unlawful purposes. Wright has been using the site for several weeks and so far no unknown transactions have shown up on his bill.

Uncompressed songs are stored on the server and will encode to your specified format and bit rate. Options include MP3, AAC, Ogg Vorbis and WMA. The better the quality, the higher the price and vice versa as file size depends primarily on bit rate.
