Napster, the RIAA's first whipping boy, has gone through many hands since its rise to fame in the early days of the internets, back then steam engines powered the tubes that brought us our glorious MP3s and porn. Too many for me to list, actually, but I am pretty certain a group of Ahmish folks owns the company now. That is changing, however, primarily because of Napster's talent for spending money hand-over-fist without actually making money. It has fallen from the number two spot (behind Apple) with only 500,000 subscribers and few real hardware tie-ins, unlike Apple and Real's Rhapsody (and the upcoming Zune from Microsoft).

The brand was once a strong name, capitalizing on its status as the first "p2p" file-sharing application, but in todays ADD-inducing, fast-paced times, something that happened over half a decade ago may as well have never happened at all. Is there anything left for Napster? More info here.
