Rumour: Amazon To Open DRM-Free Music Store PDF Print

If the rumours hold true, Amazon will open an online music store sometime in the first half of 2007. With the glut of online music services, Yet Another Music Service wouldn't really be something to write about, but Amazon is planning to deviate from the norm and offer their music without the chains of DRM. Of course, even that isn't new. eMusic is doing fairly brisk business in that arena, even without real support from the major labels.

Still, this is Amazon and Amazon knows a thing or two about selling shit online and are pretty big in their own right. Because of this, it's something I'm going to keep an eye on.

Those who know me know that I'm an Apple fanboy and that I <3 my iPod. Still, I dislike the DRM enforced on me by iTunes and as such I don't buy my music from the service. I'll do what I want with the music I purchase, thank you very much, and no one is going to tell me otherwise.

If Amazon actually follows through on the rumour, they could very well break Apples stranglehold on both the online music sales market, but even more importantly, it could allow another MP3 player to topple the iPod. I believe that the iPod's success and the success of the iTunes Music Store are closely linked.

There is one hitch, however, that could prove to be a problem. It is being said that Amazon will allow for variable pricing, unlike Apple. While the labels don't like this DRM-free stuff, they really want variable pricing and may be willing to take the good with the bad.

We'll keep you updated.
