It is possible to trace users sharing unlicensed music files through their IP address, according to music labels' first witness in their civil case against Sharman Networks, maker of peer-to-peer software Kazaa.

KPMG's Nigel Carson contends that copyright violators can easily be traced via their unique IP address, though he does state that these can frequently change. With this, and a warrant, one would assume, a person's physical location can be easily attained.

Gee, they're sure smart in Australia.

Carson also contends that Kazaa parent, Sharman Networks, can trace users by their IP address if they really wanted to... really.

These are all arguments that have been mulled over and shot down over months, if not years, in American courts. Kazaa, let it be known, is a peer to peer network, and unless this "reporter's" information is incorrect, that means that there is no central server that would record these "IP addresses".

Certainly, it can be done, but it would still require a minor change in the Kazaa client software and would still require a centralized server to hold the information. That's all I'm saying though, because I wouldn't want to give RIAA any unnatural thoughts or some such.

Carson goes further to suggest that the Kazaa client could also be crafted to kick people off when they are found to be sharing copyright files. Indeed, this is possible, but given the recording industry's track record in detecting copyrighted files over public domain files, I wouldn't bet on it being all that reliable.

Carson did admit, under threat of torture, that when he installed Kazaa, he was presented with a notice warning him of the evil path he was about to embark upon; warning him that he would suffer hideous things such as cold sores and paper cuts.
