Around this time last year, Sony made quite a name for itself by including some very nasty software on their new audio CDs. This rootkit resulted in dozens of class action lawsuits and even more lawsuits brought on by various government entities. It wasn't looking good for Sony, and it still doesn't look really good but things are starting to clear up for them.

They just settled two cases brought by Texas and California for a total of $750,000 for each state on top of restitution to consumers who purchased the ill-advised CD.

Consumers in these two states are elligable for up to $175 if they purchased these CDs and were infected by the rootkit. That is, of course, if they had to take the computer in to a repair shop to fix the considerable damage caused by the rootkit and kept their receipts. If they didn't keep their receipts or if they spent the better part of a day fixing it themselves, they get $25.

Gee, thanks.

Update #1) 39 other states have joined California and Texas in settling with Sony. The terms in all settlements are the same as above.
