Just when we thought it was safe to download again, just when we thought the RIAA had taken a lesson from SCO, the RIAA has laid waste to 896 more P2P'ers.

Of the 896 lawsuits, 152 are against users who did not heed the nasti-grams previously sent out by the RIAA's team of lawyers. The remaining 744 are new meat, fresh and ready for the BBQ.

'We are adjusting and expanding our efforts to target illegal file sharing on additional platforms like eDonkey and others,' said RIAA President Cary Sherman. 'There will always be a degree of piracy, both on the street and online. But without a strong measure of deterrence, piracy will overwhelm and choke the creation and distribution of music.'

Sherman's opinion, however, runs afoul of the recent court ruling, stating that ''The introduction of new technology is always disruptive to old markets, and particularly to those copyright owners whose works are sold through well-established distribution mechanisms,' the court said. 'Yet, history has shown that time and market forces often provide equilibrium in balancing interests, whether the new technology be a player piano, a copier, a tape recorder, a video recorder, a personal computer, a karaoke machine, or an MP3 player.'

Of course, this is like leading a dead horse to water. The RIAA will come around only after it realises the only band it represents is Metallica, or at least monkey-man Lars Ulrich (not at ALL safe for work).
