At least according to Cary Sherman. Earlier this month the RIAA lauched 204 more lawsuits against those allegedly sharing music online. Of those 204 suits, 124 have been settled.

Settlements range anywhere from $2,500 to $7,500 USD. The agreement includes no admission of guilt but does require that the user not speak out publically in a way inconsistent with the agreement.

'The fact that the overwhelming majority of those who received the notification letter contacted us and were eager to resolve the claims is another clear signal that the music community's education and enforcement campaign is getting the message out,' RIAA President Cary Sherman said.

Of course the fact that those being sued were facing fines of a staggering $150,000 USD per song plus court costs in a long and drawn out battle has no bearing on the decision made by those who agreed to settle. The only message getting out is that even though the RIAA may have the wrong person (which can never happen) the person on the receiving end has no choice but to settle when faced with a lawsuit with more zeroes than the person will likely ever see in a lifetime.

This is nothing more than intimidation. The RIAA is bullying people, it is strong-arming them into laying down and playing dead. Can one blame someone for settling? Not at all. These people have lives to worry about, families and car payments. They are typically honest people who wanted to get their music the way they wanted it and nothing more.
