The awards are designed to "...award outstanding commitment to the guitar to advanced & advancing guitarists outside of the traditional popularity contests of polls and corporeal awards programs. Additionally, to provide an instructional resource for players so that they might make practice time more productive, and to teachers to use as an instructional resource.".

This is done by "...establishing (necessarily incomplete but) objective criteria by which guitarists can assess their playing skills and musical knowledge...".

Complete criteria for each of the 4 awards is listed, and a "fundamentals" lesson provided to illustrate certain criteria, at David's web-site, along with the award graphics.
